Throughout life, it is normal for people to have changes in their libido, that is, to feel more or less like having sex. However, depending on the situation, excess or lack of desire can disrupt the individual’s routine.
But how do you know what a normal libido is?
This question actually has no right answer. Having an intense sexual desire, for example, is not a problem, as long as it does not excessively occupy the person’s thoughts. Some cases that require more attention may occur when libido:
- Interferes with work, social life, sleep or health;
- Affects mental health;
- It does not allow the person to feel satisfied, regardless of how much sexual activity they have;
- Affects the quality of relationships;
- It makes people look for sex regardless of the risks and consequences.
What can change libido?
As already mentioned, sexual desire varies greatly from person to person, but, normally, it can vary according to:
- Age;
- Mental health status;
- Energy levels;
- Physical health status;
- Hormonal issues;
- Relationship status;
- Social interactions;
- Use of medication, alcohol or drugs.
How can I lower my libido?
If the situation gets to the point of really disrupting some areas of life, as mentioned above, there are some strategies that can help. The first is to seek help from a therapist to understand where thoughts, feelings and desires regarding sex come from. The professional can help the person find ways to control their sexual desire and any problems associated with it.
Another solution is to look for a distraction, such as some form of physical exercise or a task that requires more focus.
Finally, if these alternatives do not work, you may also need to consult a doctor to understand possible next steps.
Certain medications, such as antidepressants, can decrease libido. The doctor may also suggest changing or reducing any current medications if that is what is causing the increased arousal. In addition, they may also suggest taking anaphrodisiacs – such as soy, licorice, hops and various herbs – which can help reduce libido.
